OUR STORY

How it all started...
Fábrica De Milagros was founded in 2019, inspired by Milagros Sánchez, a woman whose life was defined by service and compassion. She treated everyone equally, always willing to share what she had with those in need, especially children. Though she passed away at an early age, her dream lived on through her daughter, Milka Waterland, who turned her mother’s passion into a lasting mission.

Determined to continue this legacy, Fábrica De Milagros was created as a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting orphaned and disadvantaged children in the Dominican Republic. It began by helping a small orphanage with just 15 children, and today, it has impacted the lives of over 250. The organization provides food, education, medical care, and safe environments for children to grow and thrive.
Beyond meeting basic needs, Fábrica De Milagros has expanded its efforts to create real opportunities for a better future. It has built two classrooms and a computer lab at Casa Hogar Betel in Santiago, enabling children to receive quality education. In Hato Mayo, a batting cage was constructed to support young athletes and keep them engaged in positive activities. Additionally, two full university scholarships—one in medicine and another in nursing—have been awarded to deserving students, opening doors to brighter futures.

This mission has been made possible by a community of angels who support the cause. Without government funding or large institutional backing, Fábrica De Milagros continues to transform lives through the generosity of individuals who believe in making miracles happen.

Meet The President
Milka Waterland
”I left the Dominican Republic but I didn´t resign my dreams to contribute to make this world a better place. I founded Fabrica de Milagros to honor my mother and her belief that we can make a difference”.

- Milka Waterland
Dentist and Endodontist with a deep vocation for service, Milka has spent over 10 years transforming lives through her profession. In 2015, she moved to Houston with her husband, Armando, and their daughters, Jacqueline and Isabella, quickly becoming involved in community work.

After a period of self-discovery, Milka embraced a divine calling: fulfilling her mother’s dream of supporting disadvantaged children. In 2019, she founded Fábrica de Milagros, a nonprofit aiding orphans and low-income children in the Dominican Republic, providing them with safety, education, and health opportunities.

Her dedication has earned her widespread recognition, including the 2021 LCA Houston International Magazine Award, the 2022 Mujer CBBA Award, and the 2023 Distinguished Latina in Houston Award. She was honored by the Mayor of Houston and named Model of the Year by the Doll Foundation. In 2024, Latina Power & Poder Hispano recognized her as a Latina Who Leads by Example, and De Mujer a Mujer awarded her the Hope Ambassador Award.

Milka also received one of the Dominican Republic’s highest honors, the "Premio al Emigrante Dominicano Sr. Oscar De La Renta," for her contributions to the country’s social and cultural development. Grateful to have found a home in the U.S., she remains committed to making the world a better place.
